To celebrate the 50 anniversary of the Moon landing, let me introduce my latest picture book!
THE USBORNE BOOK OF THE MOON was written by Laura Cowan, designed by Zoe Wray and illustrated by me. (By the way, Zoe and her team did a fantastic work making the cover look shiny, sparkly and beautiful… Look for the book in your favorite bookstore to truly appreciate the effect!)
This was my first non-fiction picture book, and I must say: Oh, boy, what a different experience! There is a lot of work, research and corrections involved in making non-fiction books. I had made a non-fiction cover before (click here to see the Seashore Cover and here to see The Making Of the Cover) but illustrating a complete book has been a much more complicated process.
Also, this was the first book I’ve created using mostly digital tools. It was challenging, but it’s good to go out of one’s comfort zone once in a while! Trying out new ways of doing things always pays off in the long tern.
Since this has been an interesting new experience for me, I’m preparing a process post to share what I’ve learned (and to sing the praises of my friend Liza Ferneyhough, who helped me get this book out the door!). Heads up: the new post might take a while… I’m currently getting ready for two big trips! I can’t wait to tell you all about it.
The super cute photo below was taken by Laura Spencer. Thanks for letting me share it, Laura! I love seeing people (specially kids) enjoying my work… It’s the best feeling!
