Hola caracola,
As I mentioned in my last post, it’s been hard to celebrate the good things happening in these crazy times. But I’m making an effort to focus on gratitude and joy. So I’m here to share some very good book news!
My first book for babies came out in August!
ROCKING BED OF DREAMS is a sweet ocean lullaby written by Cari Meister. It’s been published by Little Simon as part as their New Books for Newborns collection. It was a pleasure to illustrate, and I can’t wait to show you more.
Sadly I haven’t been able to hold the book in my hands just yet... Covid has made it hard for publishers to get books where they need to go, so my author copies (the books that a publisher gives writers and illustrators for free every time they make a new book) haven’t arrived. – If you are lucky enough to go to a bookstore (oh, how I miss bookstores!) and you find it there, please send me a photo.
I started ROCKING BED OF DREAMS while living in Italy last summer. I was able to draw my friend’s baby and my little nephew for reference (I discovered that I really enjoyed drawing chubby cheeks and fat little fingers). I was able to sit down by the Mediterranean and ponder how to capture the shimmering waters. Working on this book was so much fun! And I think that shows in the final illustrations.
I plan on writing more about the process of making a board book (or book for babies) someday, because they are quite different from picture books.
And with this last post, I say goodbye for a while! In fact, I’m already out on maternity leave. Wish me luck surviving sleep depravation!
P.S. If you’d like to help me out, please rate or write a review for ROCKING BED OF DREAMS in Amazon, Goodreads or anywhere else you can think of (a short review works just fine). And if you want to buy the book online, use this link to Bookshop.org and you’ll be helping out independent bookstores.
